Flossing

We all know that flossing is time-consuming and isn't the easiest. However, If you follow these simple instructions by the American Dental Association you will be just fine!

  • Start with 18 inches of floss (waxed or un-waxed) wrap it around your middle fingers.
  • Grasp the floss tightly with your thumbs and forefingers and gently guide it between your teeth.
  • When the floss reaches the gum line, form a C shape to follow the contours of the tooth.
  • Hold the floss firmly against the tooth, and move the floss up and down.
  • Repeat the entire process on all your teeth *even those molars!*
Make sure you use fresh floss as you move along the entire mouth!

Is One Type Of Floss Better Than Another?

We're often asked, "What's the best type of floss to use?" The truth is that the best type of floss to use is the one that gets used daily! Floss cleans away plaque and food particles that your toothbrush may miss. In fact, if you don't floss, you're missing 35% of the surface of your teeth! So as long as you're flossing daily, we recommend you choose the one that's most comfortable for you.

Here's a brief explanation of the two main types of floss:
  • Nylon (multifilament) floss is most common and comes in waxed, flavored, unflavored, and varying on thickness.
  • PTFE (monofilament) floss doesn't rip or tear, so some find it glides between the teeth better.

3D Flosser?

Technology is great RIGHT?

Dental floss has been around for more than 100 years and it really hasn't changed its look but thanks to technology and a company called Blizzident, they have invented a 3D flosser!

PictureHow does the 3D Flosser work? It takes a 3D scan of the customers mouth, which will create a customized flossing wireframe, which holds four rolls of dental floss. When the customer wants to floss all they need to do is closes their mouth over the device and chew a little. This provides the perfect floss and takes only 5 seconds!

flossing-gadget-blizzidentIf you are interested in the 3D flosser all you need to do is get a 3D scan of your mouth, then send the information to Blizzidnet (based in Europe). They will manufacture and mail out your device for $232 plus postage!

Blizzident says the 3D flosser lasts many years and the only thing you will  have to replace is the floss!

Mouthwash Is An Accent To Brushing, Not A Replacement

I am sure we have all been there, myself included. In a hurry, running late, don’t have time to brush, so you swish away some mouthwash and go on your merry little way. Well, we may be able to get away with it every once in a while, but making a habit of it can do more harm than good. Fluoride is good for your teeth, gums and mouth, but too much can have a counter-effect and make things worse.  Which is why using it correctly is important. If you would like the “do’s and don’ts” for using mouthwash, then refer to my blog from July 29, 2013 "Mouthwash.. Are You Using It Correctly?”

Mouthwash is beneficial for killing germs, giving your teeth and gum that fluoride rinse, freshening your breath and breaking loose some particles between your teeth. However, brushing and flossing is more important.

Brushing removes the plaque and tartar and flossing cleans out between your teeth and gum line. Places you can’t get by swishing around mouthwash. There is no definitive answer of whether or not using mouthwash is more effective before or after you brush. So that may be something that you should consult with your dentist about and see what they recommend for you!

Dental Floss Sewing Kit Hack

I was scrolling through Pinterest last night and I came across this neat dental floss sewing kit hack. Nothing is worse then having your clothes rip or losing a button in the middle of the day and not having anything to fix it with.

Here is how to make a portable sewing kit!

Instructions:
  1. Peel off the label from the container.
  2. Open the container and reuse the spindle the floss was originally on. *Glue a grommet to each end, this will help you wind the thread on to the spindle without the thread falling off, after the thread is wound on remove the grommet (will not close correctly if left on)

  3. Cut a small piece of elastic or ribbon and hot-glue it to one side of the container. This is the needle holder.

Waxed Vs. Unwaxed Dental FLoss

Many people wonder what the difference between waxed and unwaxed dental floss is? Well there are a few differences which you might find interesting!

Waxed Dental Floss:

  • Helps slide in between tight teeth

  • Does not remove as much plaque as unwaxed floss

Unwaxed Dental Floss:

  • Could get stuck or shread while trying to get between teeth

  • Removes more plaque then waxed floss

*Either waxed or unwaxed will do the job of removing debris...

What kind of Dental Floss do you like?
