Is Just Brushing Enough?

A new study proves it may not be.  Published in February of 2013, this study has shown using a germ-fighting mouth-rinse in addition to brushing significantly reduces plaque and symptoms of gum disease!

While brushing removes most plaque and build-up from the surface of your teeth, a rinse reaches nearly 100% of the mouths surfaces.  This means that whatever areas were missed during brushing, can be reached and cleansed, helping prevent the growth of plaque and reducing risks or symptoms of gingivitis.

Flossing is also an important part of preventing build-up and gum disease!  Make sure to incorporate that in your daily hygiene regime!

Obesity & Gum Disease: Possible Link Being Researched

Researchers are working as you read this to verify the suspicion, but as it appears now, people who suffer from obesity could be at a higher risk of developing gum disease than everyone else.

The reason obesity raises the risk?

Obesity causes the body to release proteins containing flammatory properties called cytokines.  These cytokines could potentially damage or injure the gum tissue, which could likely lead to gum disease.   However, half of the US population over 30 suffer from gum disease.  Gum disease itself also releases cytokines, which if you're obese, could lead to other dangerous inflammatory diseases throughout the body.

Your Pet And Dental Health

The month of February has been dedicated to awareness of dental health in the veterinary field.

Did you know that neglecting to maintain oral care for your cat or dog could lead to other diseases that attack major organs such as the heart and kidneys?  How scary is that!

I found a really helpful article about this.  It gives you an in depth look at the dangers of not keeping up with your pets dental needs, as well as how to maintain your pets dental health at home.  Read it HERE.

Hurricane Sandy Relief: Dental Associations Band Together

As I was browsing around the ADA's website this morning, hoping to find an amazing article to enlighten our fans, I stumbled across a brief little article that will warm your heart on this chilly morning.

We all know the devastation Hurricane Sandy left behind this past October.  So much damage, so many people left without homes, so many businesses in ruins.  As they continue to rebuild and reconstruct, basic health care needs, such as dental, are unfortunately still not a priority.  It could take years for all the businesses to bounce back, but right now, rebuilding the city, homes, and restoring the coast takes precedence.

This is why I was happy to read that four states have come together, on their own accord, to raise money for all the NJ Dental Association members who suffered due to Hurricane Sandy.

The dental associations of California, Connecticut, Washington DC, and Rhode Island came together and raised nearly $50,000 for dentists in need in NJ!  Even better, the NJ Dental Association itself MATCHED the donations, making the total nearly $100,000!  It doesn't seem like much, but for some of the dentists who lost everything, this could be life changing.

It's nice to think about the amount of GOOD that is out there.  I hope you all have a beautiful Wednesday!

Snail Teeth = Better Batteries?

No, I didn't mistype that.  A researcher in California is actually using snail teeth to create more efficient materials to make batteries.  The story is so random and enlightening, I'm not even going to bother to summarize.  You will have to just READ it for yourself.

Happy Tuesday everyone!
