From a recent article, it was suggested that Coconut Oil, Lemon Juice and Baking Soda could safely remove plaque and tartar from teeth. This is what I found regarding that statement.
Why This Remedy Fails and Harms Teeth
- Lemon juice is extremely acidic. It aggressively softens and dissolves tooth enamel, the protective outer layer of your teeth.
- Baking soda is mildly abrasive. Brushing with it while your enamel is weakened by acid strips away the protective layer, leading to permanent sensitivity, increased yellowing (as the yellow dentin underneath shows through), and a higher risk of cavities.
Safe Ways to Manage Plaque and Tartar
- Soft plaque can be controlled at home by brushing twice daily with a fluoride toothpasteand flossing every day.
- Hardened tartar bonds strongly to your teeth and cannot be safely scraped or dissolved at home.
- Professional dental cleanings using specialized ultrasonic and manual scaling tools are required to remove tartar safely without ruining your teeth.
- Always see your dentist when it comes to teeth cleaning and seek his advice before trying anything as a DIY remedy! Keep smiling!
