The Surprising Health Benefits of Veneers

Many people are opting for porcelain veneers to cover imperfections in their teeth because they are less expensive than dental implants, and require a much shorter treatment time than orthodontics, but did you know that aside from the obvious smile enhancing benefits there are some other good reasons to opt for veneers? They can be used to close gaps and adjust malformations in the teeth and improve the bite, therefore aiding in digestion. They can actually strengthen the teeth against chipping and abrasion. And, because of the high-gloss/glazed finish on the veneers, they are resistant to plaque, cutting down on gum disease and gingivitis! And we all know that healthy teeth and gums contribute to the overall health of our bodies!

Just thought I'd throw that out there for anyone who might be considering extensive cosmetic dental work. Explore the possibilities!

Should I brush my dog’s teeth?

Well we all know how important it is to brush our own teeth but did you know that dogs need their teeth brushed as well?
Dogs can also get tartar, gum disease, and tooth decay, just like we do. It is important to clean your dog's teeth at least once a week, or have the veterinarian do it to prevent tartar build-up and dental problems.
There are all kinds of different toothpaste for dogs on the market now. Once you get into a routine it won’t be as hard. Starting while they are young might make it easier. (:

Flax Seed: Tiny Seed, BIG Health Booster!

Often referenced to be one of the most powerful plant-type foods on earth, flax seed has been cultivated and used in medicine for centuries. Now days, flax seed or "flax" can be found on the ingredients label on many foods including various crackers and oatmeal. Although flax seed contains an abundance of healthy components, it's 3 key ingredients have given it its healthy reputation:

Fiber- Flax seed contains both soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble fiber lowers cholesterol (thus reducing the risk of heart disease) and regulates blood sugar in people with diabetes. Insoluble fiber promotes regular bowel movement and prevents constipation. Insoluble fiber also removes toxic waste and regulates pH in the intestines helping to reduce the risk of colon cancer.

Omega-3- This is an essential fatty acid known as "good" fat. Omega-3 fatty acid is known to benefit and help regulate many conditions from high blood pressure to cancer. It has also been proven to benefit the cardiovascular and circulatory system.

Lignans- Lignan is an antioxident that reduces the risk of breast cancer in women as well as prostate cancer in men.

Pets Can Make You Healthier!

There are so many ways that owning a pet can influence a persons health. If you own a dog or cat and are especially attached to it, you probably enjoy lower blood pressure, less anxiety and even a better immune system than people who don't! Many hospitals use visiting canines to boost the spirits of people who are ill or recovering from surgery. For the elderly, just walking a dog everyday can give them much needed exercise... and a sense of purpose. People with HIV/AIDS and cancer patients are less likely to suffer from depression if they are pet owners.
And for those who are single and shy.....a pet can be an excellent ice-breaker! Dogs are naturally outgoing animals. Take them for a walk and they'll get the conversation going for you by just being themselves!

Headaches: How to treat them..

In our stressful world of deadlines and high-speed everything, it's no wonder we find ourselves taking an occasional painkiller. Here are some ways to treat a headache...

  • With a firm, circular motion, massage the web of skin between the base of your thumb and your forefinger. Continue massaging for several minutes.Acupressure experts call this fleshy area trigger point LIG4 and maintain that it is linked to areas of the brain where headaches originate.

  • Soaking your feet in hot water will help your head to feel better. By drawing blood to your feet, the hot-water footbath will ease pressure on the blood vessels in your head.

  • Have a cup of strong coffee. Caffeine reduces blood-vessel swelling, and thus can help to relieve a headache.

  • Wring out two wet peppermint tea bags and place them on your closed eyelids or forehead for five minutes.

Heart Attack - 7 Signs Women Should Never Ignore

Insomnia... Indigestion... Nausea... Body Aches...

Most women would write these types of symptoms off as everyday "womanly" issues. And rightly so... But what many women don't know is that these very symptoms could be signs of a more severe problem: Heart Attack.

Generally, when people think "heart attack", they think of gasping for air and clutching your chest, pain in the left arm, etc... While these, of course, are generally definite signs of a heart attack, statistics show that 95% of women who have had a heart attack didn't recognize the symptoms at the time. Why? Because women's signs are completely different than men's, and are often mistaken for other, more common, issues that one wouldn't normally seek medical attention for. Sadly, because of this, women are more likely to die from sudden cardiac death than men.

Here are the signs you should NEVER ignore:

Indigestion: Cramps, nausea, diarrhea or any other unusual digestive activity can be signs of a heart attack. Become familiar with your system and take note if any unexplained changes should occur.

Fatigue and/or Insomnia: Many female heart attack patients reported having chronic fatigue in the few months prior to their attacks, however, during the last month prior to the attack, many of these women also experienced insomnia or inability to fall, or even stay, asleep.

Shortness of Breath: About 40% of women reported having shortness of breath during day to day activities such as walking up stairs, activities that wouldn't normally exert them.

Anxiety/Stress: Stress is a huge risk for a heart attack. Pretty much everyone knows that. But for women, it was the emotional experience they reported. Many said they experienced severe, uncontrollable anxiety before their attacks, like knowing somethings wrong but not knowing what it is.

Feels like Flu: Flu-like symptoms could very well be a heart attack in disguise. Clammy skin, sweating, body aches, and weakness are signs you should go to the doctor and make sure it's the flu.

Jaw/shoulder Aches: While men often feel pain and numbness in the chest, shoulder and arm, women commonly don't experience anything like that. Female survivors have reported noticeable pain in areas such as the jaw, ear, neck, and shoulder much like a pulled muscle or an ache.

Protect yourself. Pay attention to your body, it will always tell you what's wrong, you just have to know how to listen.

Cheers to health and happiness!

Cold Sores VS Canker Sores

My youngest recently was crying that his mouth hurt when he ate. One night after brushing his teeth I looked in his mouth and he had a sore on the inside of his lower lip/gum area. I wasn't sure if it was a 'cold' sore or a 'canker' sore as I did not know the difference. I decided to go on line and find out. I found this article here explaining what they are. It seems as though he had got a canker sore.

Super Bowl XLV- Last Minute Party Ideas

Unprepared for this year's Super Bowl?? Did your house become the last minute party place? Or are you just not sure you'll have enough food?? No worries!! Here are some last minute snack ideas that involve a quick trip to the grocery store and just a few minutes of your time (and they're great if you have kids at your party as well!!).

-Pigs in a blanket- Just grab a package of Lil' Smokies and some Pillsbury ready made pizza dough (comes in a tube). Unroll it, cut in to small strips, and roll 'em up and bake for about 10 mins. This makes a lot and are sure to be a hit!

-Creamy Bacon Croissant Bites- This simple recipe is mouth watering! Grab a tube of Pillsbury small croissants, a block of cream cheese, and a jar of real bacon bits. Mix the cream cheese and bacon together. Unroll croissants individually. Place a spoon sized dallop of the bacon mixture on the center of the croissant dough and roll it, pinching at the ends. Bake according to directions on the croissant rolls.

-Fiesta Nacho Dip- Pick up a block of Velveeta, 2 cans of refried beans, and a large can of Ro*Tel's mexican style diced tomotoes. This is simple! Throw all this together in your crock pot and let it melt and simply stir! Serve with tortilla chips or small tortillas!

Super Bowl Sunday is usually a gathering of friends, family and food. If you plan to serve alcohol at your party this year, please be a responsible host and make sure there is a designated driver present!

Toothache in the middle of the night??

Several months ago I was up late suffering from a bad toothache. Nothing was open and I know there is not much an emergency room can do but give you pain medicine. So I went looking on line and found this article in a newsletter.
The next day I called up and also joined their plan, as I did not have any dental. I was very pleased with the service I received and would recommend this plan to those who need help with their dental costs.

Winter allergies and how to deal with them

Seasonal allergies affect approximately 20 million people in the United States. For most people, the fall and winter seasons offer relief from the condition, but that is not to say winter allergies don’t exist

Perennial allergies can be felt year-round, but are often stronger in the fall/winter seasons. Why? Because they are triggered by what’s indoors, which is where people tend to stay when the weather is cooler.

If you want to check out the common causes of allergies, click the link below...
